Ronnis and Jeremy’s House both had high draw counts, Ronnis especially, and with high draw counts comes lower frame rates. Thus, to improve the frame rate of my game engine, I need to keep the total draws per frame low. To keep the total draws per frame low, I need to optimize the rendering of the scenery. Fusing the buildings into one single image and drawing them all at once solved the frame rate problem for Ronnis. Increasing the repeat width for the ground decals in those 2 worlds also helped, especially in Jeremy’s House, as a greater repeat width means fewer draws are needed to cover the width of the screen. This video shows the aftermath, after having redone both the ground decals and the buildings/houses in each world. The result? I’m now under 2000 draws per frame and on my i7-2600K processor (overclocked to 4 GHz), I get well over 150 fps. A 2 GHz Pentium 4 may get close to 60 fps now instead of my processor being unable to keep up at 60 fps. Redoing the reef in world 8, doing all of world 19, or essentially redoing the bulk of world 15 is likely my next task.
