A video of Conway’s Game of Life, emulated in Conway’s Game of Life. Inspired by this video: www.youtube.com I made a similar video, but with the speed and scale varying smoothly over time, rather than in discrete jumps as the original video did. The life simulator used is Golly – golly.sourceforge.net which has a built-in script to generate these metapixel grids (select a pattern, and choose “metafier.py” from the scripts list). For more information about the metapixel pattern, see otcametapixel.blogspot.com The actual video is exported from Golly using a custom Python script: pastebin.com (since Golly built-in only supports rendering the view with a scale which is a power of 2, for performance reasons – this is not a particularly well-optimised or fast script to run). The audio track is a Shepard Tone: en.wikipedia.org This is also generated by a Python script: pastebin.com

A horrible “Airport Control” simulation which basically gives you FULL control of the planes, making this a top down, 2 D flight simulation. This is supposed to be a direct-to-free-online-java-game-site in 1999 yet is actually around ten bucks on Amazon, and that’s just the digital download! I actually saw a packaged CD version of this game which probably costs more. The only reason to buy this game is to use it as a music CD with graphics.

Andrew, Sarah and Sean take a look at the best multiplayer spaceship bridge simulator out there. Artemis simulates a spaceship bridge by networking several PCs together. One computer runs the simulation and the “main screen”, while the others serve as workstations for the normal jobs a bridge officer might do, like Helm, Communication, Engineering, and Weapons Control. One player plays as the Captain (in this video that’s Sarah) They sit in the middle, have no actual workstation, and simply tell everybody what to do! This game is ostensibly a Star Trek simulator, but the developer doesn’t want CBS troubles. Torpedos are called nukes, and phasers are called beams. But…Star Trek! This is the demo version, which is extremely bare bones but gives a good idea of what the game is. The full game costs (£32.76) from the developer’s site: artemis.eochu.com The full version has black holes, multiple enemy ship types, custom and prewritten scenario support (can you say Kobayashi Maru?), a community that has produced mods that allow for Star Trek ships in-game, and according to the website “a host of upgrades and fixes”. Update We now have a full free copy of the game, thanks to it’s developer! When we get enough people together, we’ll make a video of our adventures.
