This is the second of a four-part gameplay video of Gimmick!, a platform game released by sunsoft for the Japanese NES in 1992. A worldwide release of this game (as “Mr. Gimmick”) was planned but ultimately canceled, leaving only the original Japanese version and a small release in Scandinavia. Gimmick! was a major accomplishment and a beautiful game, and it’s a shame that the game never had its chance to shine. Be sure you keep annotations on! I spent a long time explaining the history and cultural significance of this game, I hope you learn something.
Man that enemy on the unicycle turret was so annoying! I ended up figuring out that if you throw a star to the right at 4:33 the game glitches and the enemy disappears.
Thanks for this. It’s really fun to watch and appreciate the accomplishments on past hardware.
Btw, Wikipedia says the ay8910 has 3 voices[1] and links to a technical page[2] that says “The PSG contains 3 independent channels, a single noise generator, and a single envelope generator.” So it really might only have 3 ‘full’ channels. I wonder what’s actually in use.
This game looks amazing i want to try it!
