MOON PATROL arcade game by Irem 1982

It’s not about the gaming skills here, just trying to bring back some memories. Player drives a moon buggy jumping over craters, rocks and land mines, shooting simultaneously at rocks in front and aliens above while dodging their missiles. Features very catchy background music and cute bouncing tires when the buggy is destroyed. Foreground and background terrain scroll at different rates giving the illusion of depth.

  1. What kind of computer is this game for? Can I download an emulator to play it? Awesome.

  2. that gameis too kick ass

  3. Heh, Ioved this game as a kid. It would still be maybe more fun now. But why is there a green landscape on the moon? I think all the quarters I put into the machine helped to fund the “Make the Moon Green” project. Bad ass game with some bad ass porn music!

  4. i remember playing a clone of this on cartoon network website almost 10 years ago

  10. I’d love for a rock band to redo the main track, along with a badass drumbeat!

  11. I remember I had the high score of 860,000 on this game in 1982 when I was 14 at Fun Fair Game Center. Wow this brings back memories…great video!

  12. This is some serious graphics and music for the early 80s.

It’s funny… This was before shooting games had settled into well-defined categories, and there were some interesting dead ends in the family tree. You’d think Moon Patrol could have spawned its own subgenre, and yet I can’t think of a single game like it.

  13. Loved that goofy purple moon car with the three wheels and jumping action.

  14. This was one of Irem’s earliest known games.

  15. Hah, I remember playing this back at the Tastee-Freeze in Detroit. Everytime I see this game it makes me think of ice cream! Love the background music it plays; kinda sticks in your head for awhile!

  18. Irem sure knows how to make great backgrounds. this is amazing for its time. their game Metal Storm for the nes is one of the few nes games i remember ever having 2 scrolling backrounds.

  19. Played this I guess in 82 or early 83, at this fire station my dad took me to. My dad was a lifelong firefighter, and this was how I wiled away the hours while he shot the shit with his comrades. Never got past the flashing minefield, I think.

  20. I used to play this at Hungry Herman’s in college park back in 1982 after eating a giant egg salad sandwich. Ahhh the good ole days!
