MOON PATROL arcade game by Irem 1982

It’s not about the gaming skills here, just trying to bring back some memories. Player drives a moon buggy jumping over craters, rocks and land mines, shooting simultaneously at rocks in front and aliens above while dodging their missiles. Features very catchy background music and cute bouncing tires when the buggy is destroyed. Foreground and background terrain scroll at different rates giving the illusion of depth.

  1. i played this to death back in the Time Tunnel and Aladdin’s Castle back in the 80s..and grab a bite from the Orange Julius..that was ages ago…around 1981-82-83..

  2. This is some serious graphics and music for the early 80s.

It’s funny… This was before shooting games had settled into well-defined categories, and there were some interesting dead ends in the family tree. You’d think Moon Patrol could have spawned its own subgenre, and yet I can’t think of a single game like it.

  3. Hah, I remember playing this back at the Tastee-Freeze in Detroit. Everytime I see this game it makes me think of ice cream! Love the background music it plays; kinda sticks in your head for awhile!

  4. Moon Patrol was the first game to ever have Parallax scrolling I believe =)

  5. In college at Iowa State in Ames… a couple of beers in me and Moon Patrol at the ready… Aces!
